PNG

Example of PNG imageShort for Portable Network Graphic, PNG is pronounced as either P-N-G or ping and is a bitmapped image format that is lossless compressed that was first introduced on January 10, 1996 and later defined in RFC 2083 in March 1997. This format was largely created as a replacement to the GIF image format after Unisys and CompuServe announced on December 24, 1994 that they expected licensing fees software that creates and displays GIF images.

The image to the right of the Computer Hope main page is an example of a PNG image.
