Native file format

Method used by the computer operating system or file management used to arrange data. For example, when saving a Microsoft Word document, the file format is arranged to be read in Microsoft Word or other programs capable of reading Microsoft Word documents.

Native file formats allow a program to distinguish the type of file and how to display that file when opened. If a file is unfamiliar with that format it will be unable to display the file or not display the file properly.
